Knit Aid

We are very pleased to announce that this year, Yarningham will be supporting Knit Aid.

Knit Aid is a social enterprise helping knitters to help others in need.  Knit Aid was set up as a response to the refugee crisis in Europe, in particular the many refugees that had travelled to France and have been living in cold and harsh conditions.

Knit Aid started their knitted donations with Calais but are proud to have extended our distribution to Dunkirk, various locations in Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.

At this year’s Yarningham will be holding a raffle stuffed full of fabulous yarny prizes with all profits going to Knit Aid.  More details about the prizes coming soon.

Also at Yarningham, City Knits will be running a collection point to gather donated items. City Knits will also be on hand to offer advice on patterns, suitable yarns and will have kits available to buy.

So, we are asking you our lovely stitchers to pick up those needles and hooks, raid your stash and make something for someone in need.

What can I make/knit/crochet?

Knit Aid work with volunteers who work in the refugee camps to make sure that they are only sending donations which are needed and useful. Because of this, Knit Aid are currently only accepting the following items:

  • Beanies
  • Snoods
  • Gloves/Hand-warmers
Please use only dark and unisex colours. We cannot guarantee that light coloured knits will be sent to refugee camps and have been specifically directed not to send these.
  • Little Snug Riding Hood toddler hooded cowl (pattern available on Knit Aid website)
  • Hot water bottle cover including hot water bottle (Pattern available on Ravelry for free with code KNITAID)
  • Fully sewn together blankets
(Please do not send individual squares or rows. Unfortunately Knit Aid do not have the capacity to accept and sew together squares)

Please do not make anything other than that listed above. Knit Aid can accept both knitted and crocheted items.

I am looking for people to get involved with Stitches and Hos’ new knit graffiti project in Birmingham.  You will need to be able to knit/crochet to a given size.  All wool will be provided.

If you’re interested please get in touch at info[@]stitchesandhos.co.uk before 15 June 2011

You can have a look at our previous knit graffiti exploits here and here

Stitches and Hos needs you!

I’m looking for a small group of knitters to take part in an event I’m planning at The Public in West Bromwich.

S&H have been asked by Trevor Pitt to take over the gallery for a day.  I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for some yarn bombing a la S&H hero Knitta .

To take part you need to be free on Saturday 16 October (times TBA) and be able to get to West Bromwich under your own steam. S&H may be able to cover the cost of travel (train or meto tickets).

If you are interested in getting involved please email me info[at]stitchesandhos.co.uk no later than 3 September 2010 for more information.
